Artist Statement.
My works are often small interventions, making use of existing materials or situations and bringing new possibilities into the world.
I explore the sentiment of objects and question our relationship with them by playfully manipulating their intended functions while staying true the fundamental qualities. I examine our surroundings and environment and create work that appeals to our various senses in order to generate an experience that communicates on multiple levels. The work expresses an emotional connection between people and objects, letting us say a new hello to something we have overlooked. Furthermore, I consider the concept of memories and associations. When you recognize something from your past or present, where does your mind take you? I use this kind of associative thinking to tease out the essence of the material, and use its properties to symbolize an action, a memory, or an anecdote. My work attributes personality, importance, culture and history on to matter that would otherwise be overlooked as uninspired with no consequence.
A large and growing theme to my work is man-made interactions with our environment. I attempt to use humble materials to represent the awesome, wild, grandeur of the natural world. Specifically, I produce installations and sculptures in reference to Mother Nature, in order to humorously touch upon the grandeur of things both in, and outside of our control. Using simple consumer-grade material, and my studio space, It is my goal to create a heartbreaking spectacle of my inability, yet capacity to construct such natural wonders. My intention is for the work to be refined, yet precarious. Work that is exceptionally well made and elegant, but acts in juxtaposition with the natural processes it explores. In consideration of fundamental issues that affect us all, I confront important topics such as time, decay and climate change. Creating a language of communication that expresses issues in a manner that is invocative and playful, for all to understand. I strive for my body of work to be clear, and appealing, which will entertainingly communicate the spectacle created by our interactions with our surroundings.
